NEW YORK (AP) -- The ultrahigh-speed Internet2 network just got 10 times faster, partly in anticipation of rising demand for capacity after the world's largest particle collider opens near Geneva next year.
Until recently, the Internet2 had a theoretical limit of 10 gigabits per second, which is thousands of times faster than standard home broadband connections. By sending data using 10 different colors, or wavelengths, of light over a single cable, operators are boosting the network's capacity to 100 Gbps.
That means a high-quality version of the movie ''The Matrix'' could be sent in a few seconds rather than half a minute over the old Internet2 and several hours over a typical home broadband line.

Developers use the Amazon Mechanical Turk web service to submit tasks to the Amazon Mechanical Turk web site, approve completed tasks, and incorporate the answers into their software applications. To the application, the transaction looks very much like any remote procedure call: the application sends the request, and the service returns the results. Behind the scenes, a network of humans fuels this artificial artificial intelligence by coming to the web site, searching for and completing tasks, and receiving payment for their work.

Report Urges Caution on Network Neutrality Regulation
The Federal Trade Commission’s Internet Access Task Force today issued a report, “Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy,” which summarizes the Task Force’s findings in the area of broadband Internet connectivity and, in particular, so-called network neutrality regulation. Based on these findings, and FTC staff’s experience with the operation of myriad markets throughout the economy, the report identifies guiding principles that policy makers should consider in evaluating proposed regulations or legislation relating to broadband Internet access and network neutrality. According to Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras, “This report recommends that policy makers proceed with caution in the evolving, dynamic industry of broadband Internet access, which generally is moving toward more – not less – competition. In the absence of significant market failure or demonstrated consumer harm, policy makers should be particularly hesitant to enact new regulation in this area.”

Software that identifies the most informative people in an online community, based on their posting patterns, has been developed by researchers at Cornell University, New York, and Microsoft Research in Washington State, both in the US.
The researchers worked out how to spot key players within discussions by analysing the connections between thousands of messages on several topics.
The work could help website designers automatically reward, or highlight, the most valuable members of a community, or improve methods for searching through a conversation for the most relevant information.

August 7, 2007 -- Web advertisers are spreading their online ad dollars across more sites and are paying lower rates in many cases, putting pricing pressure on established Internet players.
Several companies are already feeling the heat after reporting results that showed weakness in online ad revenue from Web banners and other display ads.
Time Warner's AOL reported a sharp ad sales slowdown last week. In mid-July, Yahoo! posted disappointing revenue from display ads and cut its forecast for the rest of the year.
At least three other big Web publishers - the New York Times, the Washington Post and the technology-focused Cnet - reported slowing Internet ad growth recently.
