Arts and Culture

Wij (and the rest of the world) letten op!

Kunst in Amsterdamse moskee

Deep Screen – Art in Digital Culture:
Voorstel tot Gemeentelijke Kunstaankopen 2008
30.05.08 - 30.09.08

Visual art: The focus is on the new, the trendy, the hip, the cool
Amid all the exhibits of modern and contemporary art, a display of ancient Chinese artifacts will come to Orange County.

By RICHARD CHANG - The Orange County Register - Friday, September 21, 2007
It's going to be another busy season – and busy new year – in visual art. The bigger institutions are preparing their hallmark exhibitions, while the smaller art centers are aiming to present works that stimulate thought, pleasure, dialogue and, hopefully, repeat visits.
Modern and contemporary art seem to be favorites, with a "Birth of the Cool" exhibit at the Orange County Museum of Art, a "Dalí: Paintings & Film" show at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and a big "California Video" survey next year at the Getty.
Move over "Star Trek": Seven artists will explore the "vinyl frontier" at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, while 14 international artists will incorporate animation concepts and technologies at the San Diego Museum of Art

The Signs Pile Up: Paintings by Pedro Alvarez - JANUARY 26 - MARCH 29, 2008 - UCR SweeneyArtGallery
Pedro-AlvarezThe Signs Pile Up: Paintings by Pedro Alvarez is the first comprehensive exhibition in the U.S. on the artist and his work. Pedro Alvarez (1967-2004) was one of the leading artists who established themselves in Cuba during the 1990s, a period of time that has been called the Special Period, or Periodo Especial, a time of economic crisis after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Alvarez utilized collage and appropriation in his evocative, large-scale paintings as a postmodern technique for examining cultural identity. He often juxtaposed different time periods from Cuba, along with references to U.S. popular culture from the 50s to the 90s. After moving to Spain, his interests broadened into explorations of transnationalism, among other topics. Much of the subject matter in the paintings deals with the cultural interchange between Cuba and the U.S., Afro-Cuban history, U.S. slavery, the effects of the legalization of the U.S. dollar in Cuba in the 90s, and the role of landscape painting within a highly charged socio-political context.

The Transhumanist Arts Center is designed to provide insight into the future directions of art and creativity of the 21st Century as well as a brief history of transhumanity, Transhumanist Arts, and Extropic Art.
Artists and the arts, throughout history, have been a voice and a vision of civilization. Artists, as communicators, reach out to others and introduce insight and vision about society and culture. Artists and the arts bring together the passions, the dreams and the hopes of humanity and transhumanity and express these emotions in ways that touch us deeply.
Whether it is filmmaking, industrial or graphic design, poetry, fiction, science fiction, digital images, video, paintings, music, dance, sculpture, architecture, literature—our work communicates to culture and affects the pulse of culture.

Computer Scientist Plans Bach Over Broadband - 19 Jul 2007
A singing computer scientist wants to use cutting-edge technology to create Europe's first successful Internet choir.
Dr Barry Cheetham, a senior lecturer in The School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester, is seeking to combine his academic expertise in communications, networks and digital signal processing with his love of choral singing.
He is looking for funding to drive forward a project that will bring together amateur and semi-professional singers across Europe for seamless and polished live performances.
But to make this possible he will have to address the limitations of existing communications networks.
New 'ultra broadband' networks will be needed, capable of delivering sound and images with far less delay than services like Internet telephony and video conferencing currently achieve.

UOVO is an opinions and culture magazine, a magazine of illations, confessions, convictions, fantasies, dreams, fancies, obsessions. Uovo marries features and fashion, putting fashion in the context of culture within the world we live in - how we dress, live, socialize; what we listen to, watch; who inspires us. Uovo is the first magazine to combine art culture interests with the innovation of a style magazine. Uovo is the only magazine, which takes its inspiration and departure from art to embrace celebrity interviews, quality reviews, art projects, photography and high end reader competitions. Uovo is luxurious, collectable, unforgettable and unique. Uovo is a radically new and intelligent magazine concept for people who want to read more.

POW (Pictures On Walls) was founded by a loose collection of alcoholics and show-offs that felt they were too underground (meaning not good enough) to be embraced by the proper art world. They set up their own production facility in an East London shit-hole from where prints could be produced and sold direct over the internet without the usual art world sham, snobbery and mark-up.
